Gift cards: if you are driving, do not use your ATM card for gas. Either use a credit card or buy Visa gift cards. Stopping for gas in random locations will leave you susceptible to identity theft.
 
Pack light: pack light so you can pick up a few items during the trip. One of the best parts of a quick weekend trip is buying random items. So be sure to have room in your car.
 
Dryer sheets: pack a few dryer sheets and put them into your luggage on the way back. The sheets will keep your dirty clothes smelling fresh on the way home.
